Why Newborn Diapers Signal the Start of a New Way of Life
Admit it. When you got that first package of newborn diapers, you couldn’t imagine being responsible for something small enough to fit into them. Now, the baby has finally arrived, and yes, those newborn diapers fit. And you can’t believe how many of them you’re going through.
Welcome to parenting. If the rate of newborn diapers your little darling is going through now is startling to you, just wait until you start them on solid foods. Or assume that you can wait until morning to go out and get more, because you’ve got two newborn diapers left to last you through the night. Those, of course, are always the nights where you end up needing three. Or four. Or five.
As the actuality of parenting becomes a little older, you start to anticipate and plan for these sorts of things. You become a planner, something you never thought you’d be. You used to be the person who procrastinated, and left things to the spur of the moment.
Not now. You know now that you have to have a clean bottle ready when you go to bed, because your brain certainly won’t be working at 3am when the baby is hungry. You know not to leave the house without a full complement of newborn diapers, wipes, bottles, teething rings, teething crackers, the pacifier and the favorite blanky. You wonder how something that weighs less than 10 pounds needs more luggage than you to go somewhere.
And with the newborn diapers, you learn to have extras on hand no matter what. And not a couple extra either, like a whole extra package of newborn diapers kind of extra. And never underestimate the ability of your little of bundle of joy to go through 6 newborn diapers in a three-hour outing (it won’t happen every time, but it will happen sometime.)
So stay stocked up, get a diaper bag the size of what you used to use to go away for the weekend with, and you’ll be fine. And when the other frazzled new parent in the mall family changing room asks if you have a newborn diaper you can lend her because her daughter has already run through all the ones she brought, you can look like a Super Parent when you hand it to her.
